Baby boomer or bust – why hospices need to invest in legacies now
Speaker: Kath Horsley
Based on the recent research, we give an overview of the legacy market, where hospices sit within it and why if we don’t act now hospices are missing out on a golden opportunity to generate significant income over the next three decades. Legacy Foresight’s Kath Horsley will be joined by David Pastor, Chief Executive, Claire House Children’s Hospice, Jonathan Bagley, Trustee, Claire House Children’s Hospice and Catherine Bosworth, Director of Income Generation and Grants, Hospice UK
Resilience in the face of adversity?
After a year that has included political chaos, financial turmoil and the first signs of a slowdown in that ever-important housing market, the Legacy Foresight team will provide their take on the latest developments for the UK legacy market and how the market could evolve over the coming years. They will also take a step back and look at some of the key challenges facing the sector over the longer-term and ask what we, as a sector, can do to address them.
Speakers
Kathryn Horsley, Jon Franklin
We’re delighted to have teamed up with The Institute for Sustainable Philanthropy to deliver a unique online study. In this class, we’ll share the latest academic research and the very best of professional experience and practice.
Critically, the course will also showcase new learning for legacy fundraising from the science of philanthropic psychology. You’ll learn how to help supporters overcome the barriers associated with will making and to design communications that resonate with donor identity and deliver a deep sense of supporter wellbeing that is unique to the legacy context.
The course offers 20 hours of online learning spread over a total of 4 weeks. You’ll listen to lectures, undertake assigned readings and participate in 2-3 discussion forums in each week of the class. You can log in whenever you want to, but we recommend keeping up with the weekly schedule to get the most out of the class AND the interaction with your peers.
The class is structured as follows:
Week 1: Legacy Fundraising Market
Week 2: Understanding Donor Behaviour
Week 3: Designing Effective Legacy Communications
Week 4: Legacy Marketing and the Legacy Marketing Mix
By the end of the course you will be able to:
1) Utilise key sources of information on the legacy market to inform your decision making
2) Understand who pledges legacy gifts and how you might target them
3) Develop a legacy donor persona for your organisation
4) Understand the role fundraising can play in overcoming barriers to legacy giving
5) Match donor motives with appropriate expressions of your case for support
6) Understand how to apply psych science principles to how people approach legacy decisions
7) Design legacy communications that maximize supporter wellbeing
8) Develop a legacy marketing plan for your organisation
To gain the Certificate participants will need to submit one very practical written assignment for grading/feedback from the course team. This can be either a communications critique or a legacy fundraising plan.
The course is led by Professor Adrian Sargeant, the first Hartsook Chair in Fundraising at Indiana University and now Co-Director of the Institute for Sustainable Philanthropy.

Each year, In-Memory Insight explores a new topic, building on what’s gone before. In 2020 there was a pressing need to understand how to respond to the Coronavirus outbreak. As that research highlighted, the pandemic and its outwash accelerated many trends, not least the use of digital technologies in in-memory giving and fundraising. Technology has become embedded in the in-memory universe, with implications for how it touches supporters’ lives and how charities develop relationships with their contacts. So this year, we explored the different ways in which digital technologies cut across the digital domain. We called the project In-Memory Goes Digital.
We are delighted to invite you to join our panel of digital and in-memory experts for a free webinar on Thursday 15th September at 1:00pm GMT as they sum up key trends and discuss what it means for fundraisers.

The coronavirus pandemic has brought fundamental changes to the ways people grieve for and honour the ones they have lost. Last year, video streaming at funerals, online in-memory donations, virtual LUAL events and national remembrance ceremonies hit the zeitgeist. Some of these changes are temporary, others are likely to be permanent, accelerating existing underlying trends.
What does this mean for in-memory fundraisers? What have they learned through the ‘pandemic of grief’, and how does it affect their future plans and strategies? Drawing on our latest In-Memory Insight research. We’re pleased to be chairing this session at the CIOF Fundraising Convention 2021. After a brief scene setting, we will hear from a panel of three charities, who will share their experiences, insights and plans for engaging with in-memory supporters in the post-pandemic landscape. Each panellist will share their story, then we will open up for Q&A and wider discussion with the audience. Attendees will come away armed with information and inspiration on how to reboot, or perhaps kick-start their in-memory strategy for 2021 and beyond.

LUAL, carol services and moonlight walks have long been used to connect in-memory supporters and hospices. But last year these events were suspended during lockdown. This session will explore what has changed over the past year, how have physical events pivoted into virtual events, what has worked and what hasn’t? Now that the pandemic is drawing to a close, where next for virtual and hybrid in-memory events? The session will be chaired by the In-Memory Insight team, speaking alongside a panel of hospices , sharing lessons learned and ideas for the future.

An estimated 15% drop in legacy income this year means charities must recruit new donors and retain their current ones to minimize this loss. This can only happen if your messaging, campaign performance and stewardship are stronger than ever. At this conference, Heads of Legacies and Senior Legacy marketers will look at how to make the most out of a smaller budget, the impact of CV-19 on messaging and how to adapt stewardship to keep current and future donors engaged.
We’re pleased to be joining the fantastic agenda twice; Kath Horsley, Market and Charity Analyst, will be joining the Live panel at 2pm, Maximising legacy marketing campaigns’ ROI, where they will be looking at the channels used in legacy marketing campaigns, integrated campaigns and tips to maximise performance, will-writing services and internal education of colleagues and wider teams, including outlining responses that legacy fundraisers can give to common objections.
As part of the new On-demand programme, Dr Claire Routley, Head of Legacy Consultancy, Legacy Voice, Ashley Rowthorn, Director, Legacy Voice and Richard Hill, Programme Manager, will be discussing the all-important legacy brochure, in their session ‘From enquiry to action: Inspiring your prospects to take the next step on their legacy journey’.
They will be sharing insights and learnings from our new research Legacy Inspire, which set out to identify what makes a brochure effective and to assess the effectiveness of the brochures produced by the UK’s top 50 legacy charities, gained via mystery shopping. We are delighted to be joining the Institute of Fundraising Convention again this year with our session, Baby boomer legacies: Opportunities and challenges from around the world.
We know that baby boomers represent a vital source of future legacy income for charities right around the world. But what can we learn when we compare trends and attitudes from three very different global legacy sectors: The UK, Holland and Australia?
Three expert speakers – Meg Abdy, Development Director, Legacy Foresight, Arjen van Ketel, Senior Consultant, Director of Legacy Monitor NL, and Helen Merrick, Executive Manager – Membership, Marketing & Include a Charity, Fundraising Institute Australia, will share insights on Boomer Legacy Giving from their own countries and together explore the challenge and opportunities for gifts in wills fundraisers. There are remarkable resemblances, but also differences that shed new light on the potential of this large, rich and exceptional generation.
Now in their mid-fifties to early seventies, the boomers are significantly more affluent compared to previous generations and, perhaps, the ones that follow. They have a greater openness to the idea of leaving a charitable will and represent a pressing audience for legacy fundraisers. But in an ever more complex and uncertain world the boomers have many demands on their energies, assets and emotions. In challenging times how can we ensure that the boomers become and stay involved with their favourite charity and make space for charities in their wills? By incorporating the expert knowledge of three speakers from the UK, Australia and Netherlands, each with an insightful knowledge of their own marketplace, this session will look at the challenges and opportunities presented – providing a global view of best practice, lessons learned and implications for future strategies whatever your country.
This free 90-minute roundtable is for and by people who work within the UK charitable legacy sector. Meg Abdy, Jon Franklin and Kate Jenkinson will be joining the session to discuss how the coronavirus pandemic has impacted legacy and in-memory giving. They are joining alongside fellow contributor Jenny Kronbergs Head of Gifts in Wills at Unicef UK, and hosts, Georgina Hyman and Catsnake.
With anonymous polling and contributions from the audience they will discuss how the current situation affects all our legacy plans.

It will also explore the long-term outlook for the Australian legacy giving sector, taking into account a wide range of economic, social and regional factors, as well as changing donor attitudes.
Meg will deliver a summary of the research results, to help fundraisers develop a case for support around investment into gifts in Wills programs. We are delighted to be speaking at the Institute of Fundraising Convention in 2019. Meg Abdy and Nick Rand will be joining the Legacies and In-Memory track with their session ‘Legacy and In Memory Fundraising in multi-cultural Britain’.
As our society becomes more multicultural, fundraisers need deeper insight on the relationship between an individual’s faith and their attitudes towards legacy and in-memory giving. Meg and Nick will present Legacy Foresight’s new research on the beliefs, rituals and behaviour surrounding death and remembrance in today’s Britain. Academic research and practical experience tells us that faith has an important impact on charitable giving behaviour. But far less is known about how those motivations translate on death. How – if at all – does a person’s religion effect their propensity to leave a gift to charity? Where does in-memory giving feature in the complex rituals surrounding death?
Our new research, developed in close association with the main religious charity groupings, aims to explore some of these key questions. At this session we will share the headlines of this research, and discuss with participants what it means for tomorrow’s legacy and in-memory sectors. This session will allow fundraisers to identify opportunities and challenges for their own charity’s future legacy and in-memory income, and to greater understand the intricacies of each donor group.
We hope to see you there.

Measuring and evaluating legacy marketing activities can be challenging. A lack of consistency, both within individual charities and as a wider sector, makes it difficult to evidence a causal link between what is spent on legacy marketing, and the legacy income received as a result. But despite this, and other complexities, fundraising teams need to demonstrate the value of their activities, both to secure additional investment and to evaluate the ‘return’ on the resources they invest.
Charity members of the Legacy Marketing Benchmarks project will meet at this session to discuss and assess how their legacy marketing spend and activity – including marketing spend, areas of focus, resourcing and effectiveness – measures up against the sector and peer charities.
Legacy Marketing Benchmark is open to all members of the Legacy Monitor programme. For more information, contact Kathryn Horsley

One of the key findings in our Legacy Marketing Benchmarks study last year, was that 86% of charitable bequests come from people who are neither legacy pledgers nor prospects. We've been looking to who these ‘invisible legators’ are, what motivates them to leave a legacy and what they want from the charities they choose to support – and we're excited to present and discuss the findings of the research with our member charities.

For the first time, the Institute of Legacy Management and the Institute of Fundraising come together to present a day which encompasses both legacy fundraising and legacy management.
This conference will focus on smaller and medium-sized charities. Although able to offer a more personal approach, these charities face the immense challenge of having to understand the administrative side of legacy giving, as well as the fundraising one, and with smaller teams, responsibility for both will often fall with the legacy fundraiser.
Meg Abdy will be chairing this conference and will be joined by some of the best and most relevant speakers in the sector, addressing the most topical issues in legacy giving for regional charities.

Analysis of 34 leading legacy charities’ data shows that half of all charitable legators are ‘unknown’ to them – i.e. there is no identifiable record of them on the charity’s database. A further third of all gifts in wills are from supporters with no obvious legacy interest. So who are these ‘invisible’ legators? What motivated them to leave a gift? And how do they want you to communicate with them?
At this session Meg will be joined by a panel of clients from British Heart Foundation, Guide Dogs and Macmillan Cancer Support, to discuss some of the headline messages emerging from our new ‘Invisible Legator’ research project launched this Spring.
Exploring the five principles of ILM’s Good Practice Guidance, this must-go annual event features a mix of expert speakers, interactive sessions and shared learning.
Meg Abdy will be joining the Conference to examine trends in the UK legacy market and will be discussing legacies over the near and longer-term in a time of significant demographic, political and economic change.

Will to Give are hosting a breakfast event to present the current context and highlight the potential of charitable gifts in Wills in Northern Ireland.
Meg will present up to date information on legacy giving both and within a local and UK market context, and will be asking ‘Where next for Northern Irish legacies?’.
The event will come under the umbrella of Philanthropy Fortnight, a two week series of workshops, seminars and networking events from 8th to 19 May 2017, celebrating the generosity, time, commitment and support that thousands of Northern Ireland people give every day to causes close to their heart.
This is the fifth annual Philanthropy Fortnight, which focuses on the practice of investing in good causes and explores new ways of promoting and developing the concept of strategic giving.
